Belgian Foreign Minister Visits Kigali Genocide Memorial

Kigali, Rwanda - 20 November 2025 - Vice-Prime Minister and Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot, visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, where he was briefed on the history, causes, and consequences of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, as well as Rwanda’s journey toward reconciliation and national reconstruction over the past 31 years.

During the visit, Minister Prévot and his delegation paid their respects at the memorial, standing before the remains of the Tutsi victims.

In a social media statement, the memorial emphasized that the delegation was informed about the historical context of the genocide, the truths uncovered, its consequences, and Rwanda’s progress in rebuilding unity and resilience.

Minister Prévot said he was deeply moved by the memorial and the stories of those who perished.

“On behalf of the Belgian Government and people, I once again pay my respects to the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Visiting this memorial revives the memory of the profound and painful suffering that shook our humanity and courage. It is our duty to ensure that such tragedies never happen again, in this region or elsewhere in the world,” he stated.

He reaffirmed Belgium’s commitment to combating genocide denial and ensuring justice for those responsible.

“Belgium will continue this mission with utmost determination. Fighting genocide denial and the trivialization of these crimes is a priority, just as holding the perpetrators accountable in Belgian courts is essential, because impunity is unacceptable. I commend the resilience of the Rwandan people who have overcome this tragic history and built a present and future based on unity, dignity, and progress,” he added.

Minister Prévot is in Rwanda to participate in the 46th Ministerial Meeting of the Organization of Francophone Countries (OIF), hosted in Kigali.
