AU-EU Summit: Félix Tshisekedi Advocates Respect for Sovereignty in Strategic Partnership
Luanda, Angola - At the conclusion of the 7th African Union-European Union Summit on November 25, 2025, leaders from both organizations adopted a declaration aiming to strengthen their strategic partnership. The agreement prioritizes the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the reform of international debt architecture, the digital transition, and access to clean energy for 100 million Africans by 2030. It also emphasizes sustainable agricultural development, in line with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
The discussions highlighted European initiatives such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the EU Regulation on Deforestation and Forest Reduction (RDEB), which are viewed by African leaders as potentially restrictive for exports.
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi made a strong statement, denouncing any disregard for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference. He stressed that no economic or migration program could succeed without addressing the human tragedies that continue to affect the continent.
The summit’s pragmatic approach now sets the stage for a critical test: the implementation of these commitments ahead of the next meeting scheduled for 2028, marking a decisive moment in Africa-EU relations.
