Armed Attack in Kavumu Leaves Couple and Child Dead
Kabare February 10, 2026 - Three members of the same family, including a couple and their nearly five-year-old child, were killed in an armed attack carried out by unidentified assailants in Kavumu, within Kabare territory, in South Kivu. According to local sources, including representatives of civil society in Kabare, the attack took place on the night of Sunday, February 8, at around 9:00 p.m. in the sub-village of Chirhodu, located in the Bugorhe groupement in Kavumu. The victims were identified as Janvier Ombeni Bagula, his wife, and their young child. The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility. Local civil society actors have strongly condemned the killings and are calling for reinforced security measures in the area. They are also urging residents to cooperate closely with security services to help prevent further violence. The incident adds to growing concerns over persistent insecurity in parts of South Kivu, where armed attacks against civilians continue to be reported.
