Armed Attack at Upemba National Park
UPPEMBA NATIONAL PARK March 3, 2026 - An armed group attacked Upemba National Park in Haut-Katanga province on the night of Monday, March 2, to Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The assailants targeted Lusinga, the park headquarters, where several rangers and expatriates were staying, according to local sources. The attack has been attributed to an unidentified Mai-Mai armed group. No casualties have been reported so far, and authorities are investigating the incident. Established in 1939 during the colonial era, Upemba National Park spans approximately 1,773,000 hectares and is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including zebras, roan antelopes, Cape elands, hartebeests, greater kudus, elephants, and buffalo. Park officials and security forces are reportedly on high alert to prevent further incursions and ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
