AFC/M23 Reinforces Positions Around Pinga Amid Rising Security Concerns
Walikale, July 3, 2026 - Tensions are rising around the strategic town of Pinga, in Walikale territory, North Kivu, following reports of new AFC/M23 troop movements and reinforcements along several access routes in the area. According to local sources, AFC/M23 fighters strengthened their positions on Thursday, July 2, after receiving additional personnel and ammunition through multiple routes connecting Walikale and neighboring areas. The reported movements involved the Malemo-Mindjendje axis along the Mpety-Kalembe road, the Rusamambu-Chanjikiro route, the Bukumbirwa-Misambo-Maruho corridor in Walikale territory, and the Bulende-Bukonde route from Masisi territory. Local sources indicate that these reinforcements could be linked to preparations for a possible offensive aimed at capturing Pinga, a strategic town that has remained a key objective for the armed movement. Traditional authorities from the Kisimba group have called on security forces to increase vigilance and strengthen defensive measures to prevent any advance toward the town. They also urged residents to cooperate with security services by reporting suspicious movements and activities. Despite the reported troop movements, the security situation in Pinga remains under the control of government forces. However, the broader environment remains tense, with continued military deployments and movements reported in several parts of Walikale territory. The developments add to growing concerns over renewed fighting in North Kivu, where strategic positions and supply routes remain at the center of competition between armed groups and government forces.
