AFC/M23 accuses FARDC of deadly drone strikes on civilians in Minembwe
South Kivu, DR Congo, March 30, 2026 - The AFC/M23 coalition has accused the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and allied groups of carrying out drone strikes on civilian areas in the Minembwe highlands, resulting in at least seven deaths. According to M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, the attacks took place between late March 29 and early March 30, targeting densely populated areas including Mikenke and Gakenke. He alleged that suicide drones were used in what he described as indiscriminate strikes against civilian populations, also reporting additional casualties in Shanji, Kalehe Territory, where at least seven civilians were killed and around 20 others injured. The group claims the attacks violate international humanitarian standards and accuses the Congolese government of continuing military operations despite prior ceasefire understandings linked to postponed talks in Doha. Kinshasa has not immediately responded to the allegations.
