AES Leaders Advance Plans for Sahel Confederation Bank in Bamako Talks
Bamako, December 11, 2025 - Mali’s transitional president, General Assimi Goïta, on Wednesday received a high-level ministerial delegation from member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) at the Koulouba Palace, as discussions moved forward on operationalizing the Confederation Bank for Investment and Development (BCID-AES).
The meeting focused on the bank’s mandate to finance priority infrastructure projects and support autonomous regional development, a core objective of the AES since its creation. According to officials, the BCID-AES is intended to mobilize regional resources for sectors such as transport, energy, and strategic connectivity, while reducing reliance on traditional international financial institutions.
Authorities described the talks as a decisive step toward consolidating the AES as a sovereign economic bloc, with Mali reaffirming its central role in driving the initiative. Supporters argue that the bank could inject much-needed capital into fragile economies, strengthen investor confidence, and accelerate regional integration among AES members.
Independent analysts have largely welcomed the momentum, noting that the project aligns with the alliance’s broader vision of economic self-reliance and integration. However, they caution that implementation risks remain significant, particularly in light of ongoing security challenges. Persistent jihadist activity and occasional blockades of key supply routes could slow project execution and undermine the bank’s operational viability if not adequately addressed.
Despite these concerns, Wednesday’s meeting signals renewed political commitment within the AES to translate regional cooperation into concrete financial instruments aimed at reshaping the Sahel’s economic landscape.
