A Message of Firmness and Reassurance: Diop Calms Foreign Partners Amid Mali’s Fuel and Security Challenges

Bamako, Mali - Amid growing concerns over security and fuel shortages, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, has sought to reassure the country’s foreign partners, affirming the government’s firm commitment to restoring stability.

As several embassies in Bamako advised staff to take precautionary measures, Diop outlined the strong actions taken by Mali’s transitional authorities to address the crisis. He reminded that Mali, having faced a decade-long hybrid conflict, has developed significant resilience and the capacity to manage complex challenges.

The minister paid tribute to the Malian Armed Forces and the Sahel Joint Force, commending their daily efforts to defend the nation and maintain the supply of fuel despite mounting pressures.

Responding to criticism of Mali’s choice of international partners in the fight against terrorism, Diop reaffirmed Bamako’s openness to cooperation with all nations that respect its sovereignty. He dismissed claims of a fuel “shortage” or “blockade,” calling the situation artificial and emphasizing that the government had taken “all necessary measures” through the inter-ministerial crisis management committee.

Diplomatic representatives accredited to Mali expressed satisfaction following their discussions with the minister. Igor Gromyko, Russia’s ambassador and dean of the diplomatic corps, reiterated his support for Mali.

U.S. Ambassador Rachna Korhonen also saluted the courage and determination of Malian forces in confronting terrorism, reaffirming Washington’s solidarity with the Malian people. Similarly, Spain’s ambassador, Antonio Guillén Hidalgo, welcomed the “decisive measures” taken by the government, while the ambassadors of Burkina Faso and Niger praised the resilience and unity of the Malian people, describing them as “a foresighted nation that has not wavered.”
