199 Congolese Refugees Flee to Rwanda Amid South Kivu Clashes
Rusizi District, Rwanda - December 3, 2025 - 199 Congolese refugees, mainly women and children, crossed into Rwanda’s Kamanyola border fleeing armed clashes in South Kivu, DRC.
Residents reported hearing gunfire and heavy machine-gun fire from the DRC from the morning of December 2 until the evening of December 3. The refugees were received by Rusizi District authorities and are currently housed at the Nyarushishi Temporary Camp, where basic necessities are being provided.
The mayor, Sindayiheba Phanuel, confirmed the refugees will remain in the camp until their homes are safe to return to. By the evening of December 3, the gunfire reportedly ceased. Local Rwandans working across the border noted that while no casualties were observed, fear disrupted normal work activities.
