Young Rwandans Escape FDLR Violence, Return Home After Decades in DRC
Rwanda - Residents who returned to Rwanda after years in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have recounted harrowing experiences under the FDLR, a group responsible for the Genocide against the Tutsi. On December 11, 2025, 337 Rwandans crossed the main border at ‘La Corniche’, sharing stories of abuse and survival.
Those who refused to join the FDLR were reportedly killed instantly, according to testimonies. Munyambanza Lazaro, 74, who fled Rwanda in 1994, described leaving behind his adult children and wife in the southern Ngungu area.
He said, “We thought we would only go home if God willed it. We didn’t raise animals, we didn’t farm, because of the FDLR and Wazalendo. Young men were chased and killed if they refused to work with them. As old men, we were spared, but when they encouraged us that peace had returned to Rwanda, we came home.”
Nzabirinda Reuben, 60, who left Mukingo Commune, Ruhengeri Prefecture, in 1994, fled to Kitchanga after facing insecurity from FDLR and FARDC collaborators, who would destroy crops and kill those unwilling to cooperate. “That’s when we decided to return home, though I regret the time spent in the forests of DRC,” he said. Reuben explained that young men were indoctrinated, fearing they would be labeled FDLR members upon return, while some joined the genocidal group.
Elie Ntakirutimana, 19, born in eastern Congo, could not complete school due to FDLR violence, but hopes to resume education in a safer environment.
Ishimwe Pacifique, Deputy Mayor of Rubavu District for social affairs, welcomed the returnees, calling them “the strength the country had lost.” He emphasized that they would receive assistance to rebuild their lives, including registration, basic necessities, and financial support.
The returnees were sent to Kijote Transitional Camp in Nyabihu District, where they will receive services before reintegration. Financial support includes $188 for returnees over 18, $113 for those under 18, and basic food supplies worth 45,000 Rwf per person.
