Uganda Retires 67 Special Forces Soldiers After Years of Service

Kampala, 10 August 2026 - Uganda’s Special Forces Command (SFC) has retired 67 soldiers after they completed their military service, including personnel involved in presidential security, special operations, peacekeeping and the protection of senior government officials.

The soldiers were formally retired during a ceremony at the SFC headquarters on 7 August, ahead of the wider Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) retirement ceremony scheduled for 12 August at the National Defence Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

The retirees include four captains, 17 lieutenants, 23 warrant officers, nine staff sergeants, 12 sergeants and two corporals. Other officers who attended the ceremony are expected to receive their discharge certificates during the main UPDF retirement event.

Speaking on behalf of the SFC command, Brig Gen John Mango Baraza, Director of Personnel, recognized the soldiers’ service across military operations, protection of senior officials, peacekeeping missions and other assignments. He noted that many served for extended periods away from their families and faced demanding and potentially dangerous working conditions.

Baraza encouraged the retirees to apply the skills and experience gained during their military careers to their civilian lives. He also assured them that the UPDF would continue supporting former service members through its Department of Veterans Affairs.

Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Capt Boaz Barigye Kazinduki thanked the military leadership for the opportunities provided during their service and recognized the support of their families.

The Special Forces Command is an elite UPDF formation responsible for protecting the President and other designated officials, securing strategic locations and conducting specialized military operations.
