U.S. Government Offices Close in Burundi Amid Federal Shutdown

Bujumbura - February 2, 2026 - The United States Embassy in Burundi announced that several U.S. government offices in the country will be closed due to the ongoing federal government shutdown in Washington. In a statement published on February 2, the embassy said: “U.S. offices will be closed starting February 3, 2026, until further notice regarding the government shutdown.” The closure does not affect the U.S. Embassy, which will continue to operate normally. However, the shutdown impacts U.S.-run libraries, cultural centers, and other affiliated facilities. The embassy also indicated that routine announcements on its social media platforms will be reduced to essential updates only, in line with guidance issued to U.S. diplomatic missions across Africa. The shutdown stems from a failure in Congress to pass the budget for several federal departments, amid disputes over immigration policy and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The standoff intensified following protests in Minneapolis after two civilians were killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Democrats have called for ICE reform, while Republicans argue existing immigration laws should remain in force. The budget impasse resulted in funding lapses, forcing some departments to suspend operations. This follows the end-of-2025 shutdown, which halted government operations for 43 days, the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
