Niger: Moderate Decline in Cereal Prices on Agricultural Markets

Niamey, December 12, 2025 - According to the Agricultural Market Information System (SIMA), cereal prices recorded a moderate decline during the week of December 3-9, 2025. Locally produced millet and sorghum each fell by 1%, while imported cereals remained largely stable, reflecting abundant supply and weaker commercial demand.

The average national price of a 100 kg bag of millet fell from 20,967 FCFA to 20,782 FCFA, remaining 26% lower than during the same period in 2024. Sorghum followed a similar pattern, decreasing by 1% to 18,068 FCFA, reflecting ample stocks and modest demand.

Maize prices remained virtually stable, with a national average of 18,518 FCFA per 100 kg bag, while imported rice in 25 kg bags stayed steady at 11,424 FCFA. These trends demonstrate the effectiveness of public regulation mechanisms and the structured supply chains.

Over the past year, significant declines were recorded: -26% for millet, -30% for sorghum, -34% for maize, and -28% for imported rice. Analysts attribute these decreases to abundant supply, favorable agricultural performance, rigorous stock management, and positive prospects for the 2025 agricultural season.
