Niger: Abundant Fresh Produce Available in Niamey Markets

Niamey, December 10, 2025 - Niamey markets are currently experiencing an abundance of fresh produce, with a notable drop in prices for tomatoes, onions, and cabbage. Tomatoes from Doguéraoua, in the Tahoua region, as well as imports from Nigeria, are arriving in large quantities. A 30 kg carton sells for 11,000 CFA francs, while a 40 kg basket from Nigeria goes for 18,000 CFA francs - prices lower than those recorded during the same period in 2023 and 2024.

The onion harvest from Agadez, delayed this year due to flooding concerns, has arrived two months late, with a 45 kg bag priced at 12,000 CFA francs. Conversely, onions from Tabalak arrived ahead of schedule, a month and a half early, selling for 18,000 CFA francs per 58 kg bag. Nigerian onions are also widely available, with a 130 kg bag selling for 30,000 CFA francs.

After a four-month absence, local chili peppers from Madaoua have returned to the market. A 50 kg bag sells for 22,000 CFA francs, while Nigerian chili peppers cost 18,000 CFA francs for the same quantity. However, competition from imported chili peppers continues to discourage local producers from cultivating this crop.

Cabbage from the southern Tahoua region, particularly Madaoua and Konni, is also plentiful. A full bag of 25 to 30 apples sells for 7,000 CFA francs, lower than in the past two years, reflecting a general trend of improved supply and accessibility of market garden products for consumers.
