Ndayishimiye Issues Fresh Warning Against Those Threatening Burundi

Bujumbura, 14 August 2026 - Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has issued another warning to anyone seeking to destabilize Burundi, saying any attempt to launch a war against the country would be defeated.

Ndayishimiye made the remarks while closing an African Union-organized youth meeting involving participants from several countries. He told the young delegates that war had caused immense suffering during his youth and said he did not want Burundi to return to a period of conflict.

The president warned that whether an attack came from within Burundi or from abroad, those responsible would face resistance. His latest comments echo warnings he has repeatedly issued over the past year amid regional instability and concerns over armed groups operating against his government.

The remarks come as Burundian armed groups, including RED-Tabara and FNL-Nzabampema, continue to call for political change and say they will maintain pressure on the government. Earlier in August, RED-Tabara declared that what it described as the time for Burundi’s liberation was approaching.
