Mia Amor Mottley Reaffirms Commitment to Rwanda After Re-Election

BRIDGETOWN, February 15, 2026 - Mia Amor Mottley, re-elected for a third term as Prime Minister of Barbados, has reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Rwanda following her decisive electoral victory. After securing a landslide win in the parliamentary elections - with her party, the Barbados Labour Party, winning all 30 seats - Mottley thanked Paul Kagame for his congratulatory message and underscored the importance of continued cooperation between the two nations. President Kagame had earlier congratulated her, calling the victory well deserved. In response, Mottley expressed appreciation for what she described as a friendship rooted in mutual respect and shared development goals. She emphasized that Barbados places great value on its relationship with Rwanda and looks forward to deepening collaboration aimed at protecting dignity, expanding opportunities, and advancing prosperity for their respective populations. Growing Strategic Partnership Relations between Rwanda and Barbados have strengthened in recent years through agreements in areas including air transport and sports cooperation. A key component of this partnership has involved collaboration with RwandAir to enhance air connectivity. In November 2022, Prime Minister Mottley inaugurated Barbados’ embassy in Kigali during an official working visit - a move that followed President Kagame’s visit to Barbados earlier the same year. Those engagements led to the signing of multiple cooperation agreements. Barbados, a Caribbean island known for its thriving tourism sector and investor-friendly climate, has increasingly sought to expand its diplomatic and economic partnerships beyond the region. The renewed mandate for Prime Minister Mottley is expected to further consolidate ties between Bridgetown and Kigali as both countries pursue expanded South-South cooperation.
