Mali Advances Sports Diplomacy at Global Ethnosports Forum in Türkiye
Antalya, April 7, 2026 - Mali has reinforced its engagement in international sports diplomacy through participation in the 8th World Ethnosports Union Forum held in Antalya, Türkiye. The Minister of Youth and Sports, in charge of Civic Education and Citizenship Development, Abdoul Kassim Ibrahim Fomba, attended the closing ceremony of the biennial event alongside several international counterparts. The forum brought together representatives from multiple countries to promote traditional sports and cultural heritage as tools for social cohesion, peacebuilding, and intercultural dialogue. Following Mali’s accession to the World Ethnosports Union, Minister Fomba announced a key national priority: the establishment of a Malian Federation of Traditional Sports. This initiative is expected to receive technical support from the Union to develop standardized rules and competitive frameworks. The Ethnosports movement promotes traditional sporting practices alongside cultural expressions such as music, culinary heritage, and indigenous games, positioning them as instruments for fostering unity and shared identity. Officials described Mali’s participation as part of a broader effort to strengthen its cultural visibility and expand its sports diplomacy on the international stage.
