EquityBCDC and Digital Economy Ministry Sign Inclusion Partnership
Kinshasa, DRC, August 13, 2026 - In a significant move towards enhancing digital transformation and financial inclusion in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Digital Economy Minister Augustin Kibassa Maliba and EquityBCDC CEO Willy Mulamba signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 13, 2026. This partnership aims to leverage technology and innovation to improve access to financial services across the country, aligning with the objectives set forth in the 2019 National Digital Plan and the 2023 Digital Code.
The MoU outlines several key initiatives, including the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, the development of a self-boarding platform, and the establishment of a digital identification and payment infrastructure. These initiatives will operate under Congolese regulations, ensuring compliance and fostering a secure digital environment for users. The collaboration is particularly timely, given the ministry's establishment in August 2025, which underscores the government's commitment to advancing the digital economy.
EquityBCDC, a subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings following its majority acquisition of BCDC in July 2020, is poised to play a pivotal role in this digital transformation. The bank's extensive experience in financial services and technology positions it as a key player in driving innovation and expanding access to banking services for underserved populations in the DRC. This partnership reflects a broader trend in the region, where financial institutions are increasingly recognizing the importance of digital solutions in promoting economic growth and inclusivity.
As the DRC continues to navigate its economic challenges, such collaborations between government and private sector entities are essential for fostering a more inclusive and resilient financial ecosystem. The success of this initiative will depend on effective implementation and the ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
