DRC Records First Legal Gold Exports from Haut-Katanga, Targets 15 Tons by 2026

Kinshasa, February 10, 2026 - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially exported its first legal artisanal gold from Haut-Katanga, following the opening of a provincial branch of DRC Gold Trading S.A.A. in Lubumbashi. In just a few days, over 20 kilograms of gold were collected, traced, and exported-a historic first for a region traditionally known for copper and cobalt, where no artisanal gold had previously been legally exported. The government has also expanded its presence in Haut-Uele, opening another DRC Gold Trading S.A.A. office in Durba to improve production traceability and bring administrative support closer to artisanal miners. Authorities emphasize that this effort aims to formalize the gold sector, replacing the informal market with official channels to strengthen transparency and economic sovereignty. Nationally, over 10 tons of gold have been exported in the past three years, generating $1.5 billion in revenue-compared to just 25 kilograms over the previous thirty years. The target for 2026 is 15 tons of exports, with expected revenue exceeding $2.6 billion. Joseph Kazibazib Mahombi, CEO of DRC Gold Trading S.A.A., confirmed that the expansion will continue with new facilities in Mbuji-Mayi and Kinshasa, contingent on security and banking system support. Currently, DRC Gold Trading S.A.A. operates approximately ten facilities nationwide, securing transactions and providing assurance to cooperatives and artisanal gold miners.
