AFC/M23 Detains Five Kirumba Notables Accused of Links to Kinshasa MP

Lubero, North Kivu, August 6, 2026 - On August 6, five notable figures from the Kirumba community were reported to be in the custody of the Alliance Fleuve Congo / M23 (AFC/M23) after being detained for approximately one week. The individuals, including a local nurse, have been accused of collaborating with Deputy Muhindo Simisi Obed, a member of the National Assembly known for his vocal opposition to Rwandan aggression in the region. The AFC/M23 alleges that these notables were involved in destabilizing the commune with financial support from the deputy, whose office has since been closed.

The detained notables have publicly demanded their release, asserting that their detention is politically motivated and aimed at suppressing dissent against the AFC/M23's authority. Deputy Simisi Obed, who has been a prominent figure in advocating for the rights of his constituents, declined to comment on the situation when approached.
